I like the story, Chauffeur Driven by Simon Kyle Parker. The playwright uses a general diction so that the story is easy to understand. The situations and conditions are well described. When I read it, I can feel what the atmosphere in the story is like. I feel like I'm in that part of the story, and I think this story has a good moral message.
The Chauffeur Driven tells about a boy who lives well off but doesn't get enough attention from his father. His father who was busy only fulfilling his financial needs. These conditions make the moral behavior of the boy becomes not really good.
At the beginning of the script, there is the statement "Rex kicks out at the back of Mark’s seat, Angrily." The kick out at the back statement states that Rex had a problem with how he should behave towards other people. In the dialogue "My father is your employer," maybe for him he can do anything to the people who work for him.
The social problem that occurs in this story is the moral behavior of a child who is not good. It can be caused due to lack of attention from parents towards children. As good parents, in addition to providing financial needs, they must also pay attention to the moral needs of children. Although moral needs can be obtained from others, it is better if moral attention is obtained directly from parents as the first person who is close to the child.
In this story Rex is reunited with a driver who is different as usual drivers, Mark. Where there is one statement in the dialog in the Mark dialog liker "Regular driver on holiday. To get away from you. I think. I'm doing this one week and no more." From there, it can be seen that Mark is a temporary driver for some time. As a driver, there are several actions that make us as readers feel surprised. As he said "No music. You just sit there and wait. I like to drive in silence so be quiet." The driver dared to refuse orders and told Rex to sit and wait.
The driver's courage can also be seen from some of the actions described in the script, like when they were on their way home.
Mark suddenly makes a sharp turn.
REX
Hey. Where are you going. This isn’t the way home.
Mark ignores him. Speeds up. Rex looks very worried.Until the driver can conquer Rex when discussing Rex's father, as in this statement.
Rex begins to cry. Let’s the tears roll down his face.
REX
My father wouldn’t come. Not even if I was dying. He still wouldn’t come.
Marx's assessment of Rex is now different as in this part of the script.
Rex wraps his arms around Mark, buries his face into his stomach and hugs Mark tight. Mark looks down at him and smiles warmly.
MARK
You’re not so bad.
Parker
as a playwright gives a tendency to the male characters in the script.
As in the statement, "Handsome with big blue eyes", describes the good
looks of a man. Beside that, another statement about Mark "Messy hair
and tattoos on his neck drives." Mark's tattoo indicates that a man is a
strong person.
At the end of the story I feel happy. Rex became
more intimate and kind with his driver. A child who gets moral learning
from his driver. Now we know that moral education can be obtained from
the surrounding environment. Even though parents shou
n their way home.
